Broken Window? What To Do While You Wait For Help

Posted on

Did a neighbor throw a ball and hit your window, shattering glass everywhere? Did an indoor mishap lead to a serious window issue? No matter why your window broke, you may not get help fixing it immediately.

You may need to wait for a window repair professional to arrive. If you have a broken window, here are a few things you can do in the meantime.

Pick Up Extra Glass

First, if there is any glass left in or around the window, you should clean it up. If possible, try to avoid touching any of the shards with your skin. Use gloves or another type of hand protection. If the glass is in large pieces, you can carefully pick it up and dispose of it.

For smaller shards, you may want to use a broom and dustpan. Slowly sweep the glass into the pan and then dispose of it. If you don't have a broom and dustpan, you can use a vacuum to clean up the glass.

Cover the Window

Once you have picked up all of the glass, you will need to cover the window. This will help to keep your home secure and prevent anyone from getting hurt. If you have a piece of plywood or another sturdy board, you can nail it over the window.

If you don't have a board, you can use a heavy blanket or towels. Some people use cardboard as well. Tape the covering in place so that it doesn't move, even if a pet tries to move it out of the way.

Secure Your Home

If the broken window is in a door or near the lock, you will need to take extra steps to secure your home. You don't want anyone to be able to come inside. If possible, move a dresser or another piece of furniture in front of the door or use it to block the window.

You can also use a rope or bungee cord to secure the door or window. You should do anything that will make it more difficult for someone to come in, especially if you have to leave the house or sleep until the professional arrives.

Call a Window Professional ASAP

Once you have taken steps to secure your home and everyone inside, you need to call a window repair professional. You want to get the problem fixed as soon as possible. A broken window is a security risk and it can also let in bad weather.
